Tots to Teens: A soothing soap for sensitive skin made on a family farm

Bó Bar Soaps are handmade on the family farm

Gail Daniels’ daughter developed eczema at the age of two, and the Kilkenny-based mum was advised to use steroid creams and a range of increasingly harsh lotions on her sensitive skin. None of them worked, so Daniels resorted to using whole milk from the cows on her family farm to create a soothing soap.

That’s Bó Bar Soap's origin story: soaps free from palm oil, parabens, synthetic colours and chemicals. The range includes the original base recipe, which is plain and unscented, and bars of soap that contain essential oils and other natural ingredients such as honey and oats, tea tree, lavender, calendula and nettle.

All are handmade on the family farm. They come packaged in fully biodegradable and compostable cow print. Each bar weighs approximately 100g and costs €7.95.

Processing feelings about parents' breakup

A family breakup can upset and confuse children, causing them to worry about their future. Where will everyone live? When will they see their parents?

It’s Not Fair is an illustrated book that provides some answers to these anxiety-inducing questions. It tells the story of Bród, a bunny whose parents are separating. Bród has difficulty coming to terms with this, but with help from trusted family members, friends and teachers, Bród learns to cope with their overwhelming feelings.

Written by Deirdre McCarthy, a social worker who has worked with the child and family agency Tusla and now runs the Cork-based consultancy family3fsc.com, the book is aimed at primary school children. It helps them understand that there are different types of families and homes, that conflict can be resolved and that families can love each other, no matter what.

There is also a companion workbook for children to help them process their feelings about their parents' breakup.

The book cost €10.99. The workbook costs €6.99, and both are available at buythebook.ie

An encylopedia of whimsy with prints on old pages

This print of Alice watching butterflies will add colour, character and a touch of whimsy to any child’s bedroom. It’s created by the Wicklow-based artist Pat Byrne, who sources old, discarded and preloved books that are destined for landfill and breathes new life into them by printing his illustrations onto their pages.

This particular illustration is printed onto a page carefully selected and removed from an 1880s encyclopaedia.

Each print comes with a mount and backing board, which means the final product measures 297mm by 210 (A4 size) so that it fits into standard frames that are easy to source.

This print costs €20 and is available from jamartfactory.com or patbyrneprints.com
