THE former home of French telecoms company Alcatel, where planning permission exists for conversion to a distillery, is on the market near Bandon for €2.5m.

On a substantial 6.1-acre site (2.47ha), the 44,000 sq ft (4,088 sq m) premises is in the IDA industrial estate in Laragh, 4km west of Bandon.

An industrial/commercial unit, it includes a 22,000 sq ft (2,044 sq m) warehouse/manufacturing area and 22,000 sq ft of offices over two floors.

The building first opened in 1983 and was “one of the earlier IDA launches” according to selling agent Andy Donoghue of Hodnett Forde. Alcatal was for a time a significant local employer, with a workforce of 160.

The building has been vacant now for a number of years, but has planning permission in place for conversion to a distillery with visitors’ centre which runs until May 2026. A West Cork operator had expressed interested in running the distillery but the business did not go ahead. The building is now being sold by international vendors.

Mr Donoghue said the site is suitable “for a variety of uses. Food businesses are predominant in the industrial park, but there are also engineering and manufacturing firms.

He said the unit on offer, is “a huge unit, a blank canvas” and that he’s seeing good interest.

“I’ve had a number of enquiries, alongside a number of viewings, with a variety of interested parties, from manufacturing, to storage, to transport to food busineses,” he said.

Mr Donoghue added that the unit is just a half hour drive from Cork city (35km).
