Treat the curious kids in your life to a copy of Ireland in Numbers, a book that is brimming with fun facts about life in Ireland in the past, the present, and the future.

Written by Jackie McCann and with colourful illustrations by Dermot Flynn, it covers the period from the foundation of the Irish Free State to today. Readers will find statistics about our population, the languages we speak, the jobs we do and discover there are more cows in the country than people. It’s accessible, often surprising and infused with pride at how far we have come as a nation.

Ireland in Numbers is published by Gill Books, €19.99.

Poncho-style jumpers

It may be February, but it will be a while before the temperatures start to rise. If you’ve got little ones, the colourful poncho-style jumpers from award-winning Linda Wilson Knitwear will keep them cosy.

Wilson, who is based in Limerick, designed these jumpers to be warm yet lightweight and easy to wear. They are made from a blend of cashmere and merino wool, with part of the jumper gathered into the sleeves to create volume while the remainder is left open at the side seams for ease of movement.

They cost €60 and are available from www.lindawilsonknitwear.com.

Teidí Tours at Croke Park

Young GAA fans are invited to have a ball with the Teidí Tours at Croke Park for the mid-term break.

On Thursday and Friday, February 20 and 21, these tours give children the opportunity to make their own sports bears. The process will start with selecting the bearskin. The next step is stuffing the bear, making sure not to forget to insert its heart. Then, it will be time for the bear to get its name, receive a birth certificate, and dress in the GAA Museum training kit.

From there, the children and their new furry friends will be brought on a guided tour of Croke Park Stadium, including a visit to the dressing rooms and a chance to go pitch-side. The final part of the tour will bring them into the GAA Museum, where they can learn fun facts about the GAA and Croke Park, as well as get a chance to test their football and hurling skills in the interactive games zone.

The tours are suitable for children aged three and older. Tickets cost €10 per adult and €30 per child, which includes the toy bear.

Nurturing relationships

If you’re a parent or caregiver who would like to learn more about how to nurture a strong and loving relationship with young children, an event taking place at City Hall in Cork on Friday, February 14, could be just the thing for you.

Let’s Grow Together, an early intervention programme working to improve the lives of children and their families on Cork’s northside has joined with the Irish Association for Infant Mental Health and the Irish Play Therapy Association to invite Dr Dan Wuori to Cork to present ‘The Science of Love’.

Wuori is an expert in early childhood development and has spent more than 30 years advising governors and state legislators on early years policy across the US. He is also widely known for his X social media account @DanWuori, where he posts daily videos that give cute and informative insights into how children learn and form attachments.

His talk will be interactive and positive and full of tips on building a loving relationship with children from pregnancy and into adulthood. It takes place from 12.30pm to 4pm; tickets €25, include a light lunch.
