A smoothie and acai bowl company have received the green light from Cork City Council to open a new café on Oliver Plunkett Street.

The owners of the popular smoothie brand Oakberry received permission to change the use of the former Body Shop premises in Cork city centre from a retail to a café unit.

The development at 82-83 Oliver Plunkett Street will include some indoor seating as well as alterations to the shopfront signage.

Oakberry was founded in Brazil in 2016 and has since expanded to more than 600 stores worldwide.

The Oakberry Franchise for Ireland was acquired by businessmen, Nick Twomey, Cian O'Donoghue, and Ben Mulligan, who opened their first store in Dublin in 2023.

Meanwhile, Cork City Council has also given the green light to Munster Technological University (MTU) for the construction of a high-performance indoor athletics centre at its Bishopstown campus.

The university sought permission in June last year to build a centre up to three storeys in height to include sports laboratories, classrooms and studios, with the development spanning 5,330 sq metres.

The new performance centre will also have an external roof terrace, new photovoltaic panels on its rooftop, external lighting, signage and associated landscaping, site and service works.
