Gardaí appeal for witnesses after man dies in Westmeath collision

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision in Co Westmeath.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of the two-vehicle crash on the N55 at The Pigeons at approximately 11am on Thursday.

The driver of one of the cars, aged in his 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

"His body has since been removed to the mortuary at Tullamore General Hospital where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course," said a garda spokesperson.

A male passenger in his 80s was taken to Tullamore General Hospital for treatment for injuries believed to be non-life threatening at this time.

'Diversions in place'

The male driver of the second car in his 80s was also taken to Tullamore General Hospital for treatment of injuries believed to be non-life threatening.

No other injuries were reported.

"Garda forensic collision investigators have completed a technical examination of the scene. The road remains closed with local diversions in place," the spokesperson added.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area between 10.15am and 11.15am on Thursday are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí.
